The Mercedes-Benz G-Class or G-Wagon, short for Gel ¤ndewagen, (cross-country vehicle) is characterised by its boxy styling and body-on-frame construction. It uses three fully locking differentials, one of the few vehicles to have such a feature. The G-Class is still in production and is one of the longest produced Mercedes-Benz in Daimler's history with a span of 32 years. It was developed as a military vehicle from a suggestion by the Shah of Iran and offered as a civilian version in 1979. The first major refinements were introduced in 1981, including an automatic transmission, air conditioning, an auxiliary fuel tank, protective headlamp grilles and a cable winch. Fuel injection became available in 1982 when the 230GE was introduced in Turin, along with more comfortable and supportive front seats, auxiliary heating, wider tyres and fender flares. For 1985, differential locks, central door locking and a tachometer become standard.
Originally registered on 1st August 1991, this five door G-Wagon has only had one owner from new and has covered only 87,000 miles in its 27 years on British roads. The champagne paintwork is in excellent order and the beige leather interior shows very little signs of wear; clearly this has been a Mercedes-Benz that has been exceedingly well looked after. Often these rugged utility vehicles have had a hard life but J265 JDX does not fall into that category. The 2962cc petrol engine runs extremely well and we are advised she drives with no known faults. Supplied with a V5C registration document and a current MoT test certificate together with the original service books, this long wheelbase G-Wagon benefits from having seats to the rear making this a genuine seven seats; the condition of this Mercedes-Benz can only be described as exceptional, perhaps one of the few indicators of this carâ s age is the Motorola car phone attached to the centre console.
