The high performance twin cam model of the famous MGA was added to the range in 1958. Available in both fixed head and roadster versions, the new model could be visually identified by the fitment of knock-on Dunlop wheels and scuttle-mounted badges proclaiming 'Twin Cam'. The new engine boasted a cross flow cylinder head in aluminium alloy, larger SU carburettors and twin chain-driven overhead camshafts whist the displacement was increased to 1588cc, giving 108bhp at 6,700rpm and a top speed of 113mph allied to brisk acceleration. To cope with the increased performance, Dunlop disc brakes were fitted both front and rear. The model was universally popular with 2,111 made worldwide, most in left hand drive format. This original UK supplied right hand drive MGA Twin Cam was purchased new in 1959, our vendor purchased the car in 2012 from a Bonham's auction in Oxfordshire. A fabulous history file indicated that this car was originally restored between 1978 and 1981 by Simon Robinson and denotes that this example is well known to the MG Owners' Club, having been featured numerous times in club magazines, copies of which can be found within the impressive history file which also contains an original green replacement buff logbook, countless invoices and provenance which all indicates that the 22,000 shown on the odometer is likely to be correct. Since 2012 the current vendor has spent time and significant sums of money ensuring NCL 542 reflects the car that featured so heavily in many magazine articles. In 2014 he sent the MGA to Classic Restorations, some £21,000 later the car looks fabulous, coupled to this an uprated fan and a new hood was fitted in 2012. The vendor informs us the car drives very well indeed and with recent attention to the timing of the twin cam engine that now reflects the impressive car it should.
