Before any official announcement, reports began running during April 1965 within the automotive press that Chevrolet was preparing a competitor to the Ford Mustang, code-named Panther. On 21st June 1966, around 200 automotive journalists received a telegram from General Motors stating, ...Please save noon of 28th June for important SEPAW meeting. Hope you can be on hand to help scratch a cat. Details will follow... (signed) John L. Cutter â “ Chevrolet Public Relations â “ SEPAW Secretary. The following day, the same journalists received another General Motors telegram stating, Society for the Eradication of Panthers from the Automotive World will hold first and last meeting on June 28...(signed) John L. Cutter â “ Chevrolet Public Relations SEPAW Secretary. These telegrams puzzled the automotive journalists. On 28th June, 1966, General Motors held a live press conference in Detroitâ s Statler-Hilton Hotel, announcing a new car line, project designation XP-836, with a name that Chevrolet chose in keeping with other car names beginning with the letter C. The new Camaro name was then unveiled. Automotive press asked Chevrolet product managers, What is a Camaro? and were told it was a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs. This stunning Camaro was sold new in 1967 in the Australian market, hence the very rare righthand drive configuration. As with all Australia market vehicles, it was produced as a standard model Camaro. It was imported to the UK in 2000 by a well-known enthusiast who was looking for an excellent base vehicle for a specific project â “ to create a righthand drive version of the iconic SS Camaro! Over the next few years a comprehensive upgrade program was undertaken with a huge number of authentic SS parts imported to create this amazing and authentic example â “ of course, including the V8 engine! Subsequent to this, and paying tribute to the authenticity and quality of the works performed, the car was selected to appear in the American made 2013 blockbuster movie â Fast & Furious 6â set in London - thankfully being seen a few times but only statically and not drifting around the streets! Following this, the car was exhibited in a London museum before being purchased by the vendor. Most recently, the car has been submitted to a recognised authority on American cars for a comprehensive check, service and set up. The result, a car that drives as well as it looks.
