Mercedes-Benz has been producing an SL (Sport Leicht) model or range of models since 1954 when the landmark 300 SL was unveiled. The similarly styled, but mechanically unrelated, 190 followed in 1955, completing the first generation of cars. Their successor was the W113 series SL which proved to be more comfortable than the former and faster than the latter. Mercedes-Benz Chief Engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut, who was as competent behind the wheel as most racing drivers, demonstrated the capabilities of the 230 SL on a tight short race track near Montreux in 1963, where he put up a best lap time of 47.5 seconds and, incidentally, out-performed Mike Parkes in his Ferrari 250GT.
This 230 SL was first registered on 12th June 1964 and delivered as a genuine UK righthand drive example. It is finished in period non-metallic navy blue, with contrasting cream interior and blue carpets. The hood is trimmed in matching navy blue and the optional hard top is present and in excellent condition having been fully refurbished with new seals and chrome. This example also retains its original radio and much sought after ivory steering wheel. The bodywork was repainted some time ago; however, the paintwork remains full of lustre and presents very well. The SL was garage stored and used sparingly throughout the last ownerâ s tenure, who kept it maintained and serviced to be used as a reliable classic to travel to the South of France in the summer when called upon.
Clearly cherished, the history file highlights that the engine was upgraded to 250 SL specification on its 11th birthday in June 1975, carried out by a Mercedes-Benz main dealer with the log book updated accordingly. Effectively a 250 SL with a manual gearbox, this is considered as the most desirable combination of all the variations. The car is presented with a good supporting history folder, comprising MoTs, purchase invoices, reports, Mercedes main dealer or specialist service invoices dating back to 1975.
