The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL made history at the New York International Motor Sports Show in February 1954 by being the first new production car to be unveiled outside of Germany. The impression was a neat and sporty especially when displayed alongside its elder brother, the 300 SL. It was a huge success with its engine boasted four inline cylinders delivering a respectable 108bhp for that era. The lines were exquisite and it was universally acclaimed for its design and performance. This striking example was originally a California state car, built in 1959 and then shipped to the UK in November, 2015. After landing, it was stripped and all sills and floors checked and repaired where necessary. It was then repainted in the original factory black with a red leather interior. The comprehensive overhaul is not limited to the exterior however; the engine has been partially rebuilt by the Sheffield Supercar Centre. The interior trim, including seats and carpets, has also been restored by the same Sheffield-based specialist company. The exterior chromework has also been restored. This cherished example has been with the same owner since landing and comes complete with UK registration documents as well as invoices showing all restoration works. Whilst the soft-top requires some attention, the rest of the car is in excellent condition throughout. These superb classics are blue-chip collectorâ s cars and fall outside of the vagaries of fluctuating markets. Presented in arguably the best colour scheme and well restored, this example is certainly worth investing in and should feature in any serious collection.
