By the late 1950s, Alfa Romeo had become a top tier name in the world of sports cars with adequate performance both on and off the track. Despite the reliable power derived from the 2000 series inline four cylinder cars, Alfa Romeo saw the need for a larger, more powerful engine. The new flagship models the 2600, were introduced at the 1962 Geneva Motor Show. The coachbuilt Sprint by Bertone and the Spider convertible by Carrozzeria Touring in Milan were expensive and were rare even when new due to being constructed by hand. While the coachbuilt examples would represent the last of the hand assembled Alfa Romeos, it was the 2600 Spider by Touring that was fit for long distance driving. It offered drivers a sense of style, performance and comfort that could only come from Italy. The 2600 models would be the last inline six cylinder Alfa Romeos to feature dual overhead camshafts and as a result are some of the most sought-after classics by Alfa Romeo enthusiasts and collectors today.
Manufactured in 1964 at Carrozzeria Touringâ s new factory at Nova Milanese, this 2600 Spider is a rare Tipo 106.08 model, a factory righthand drive car supplied new to race ace Roy Salvadoriâ s Alfa Romeo dealership Chipstead Motors on 19th June 1964 and is finished in stylish Grigio Grafite (AR716), the same colour as the car is today. Only 2255 of these cars were produced, with just 103 being righthand drive configuration. Little is known of this carâ s early history but its English owner took it to Spain in 1980 where it lived in Barcelona, moving again to Italy in 2008 when the previous owner imported the car. This matching numbers Alfa Romeo has had a photographically documented bare metal restoration carried out by Italian artisans in 2013 to 2015, since then around 4000 miles have been covered, so the car is now bedded in well and looks fabulous. Eschewing reproduction parts, the quality of the restoration is exceptional and great care has been taken to produce an authentic car, down to the correct Solex PHH carburettors, often lost on these cars. The paint finish on this Alfa Romeo is sensational; a thin coat with a superb shine and is probably better than when the car was new. Every single item of trim has been re-chromed, again to the highest standard and the fit of all bright work is exceptional. The windscreen was replaced and all new rubber seals were fitted. The hood was redone using the finest mohair and is unmarked. All road wheels were blasted and repainted, shod with correct Michelin tyres and rounded off with a set of superb hubcaps. The chassis was stripped and any rust repairs seamlessly completed, the whole chassis receiving a protective anti rust treatment at the same time. As part of the restoration, a major mechanical overhaul was performed seeing components removed and renewed or repaired as required. All the suspension was dismantled and refinished, with new bushes and shock absorbers fitted. All hydraulics were replaced and the entire braking system renewed. Under bonnet presentation is very sharp indeed with all the right finishes and pleasingly some original items have been retained including the lubrication sticker and fuse box legend. The interior has been completely renewed, with the unique two-tone upholstery faithfully replicated. The car is presented with its original tool kit and the all important Alfa Romeo Classiche certificate. For concours, touring or investment, this is a first quality example in the best colour, just superb and probably the best 2600 Spider available today.
