The Mercedes-Benz W111 series was produced from 1959 to 1968 and was one of Mercedes top-range vehicles. They were elegant and well built vehicles aimed at wealthy or successful individuals who appreciate a finer finish to their motorcars. In 1957 the design began for the two-door Pontons. Most of the chassis and drive train were to be unified with the saloon and therefore the emphasis was on exterior styling. Some of the prototypes show that Mercedes-Benz attempted to give the two-door car a front styling similar to the Pagoda Roadster, whilst the rear bodywork was officially still called a 'fintail' although the rear end design had no chrome fin highlights. Production began in late 1960 and the Coup was premiered in Stuttgart for the 75th anniversary of the opening of Mercedes-Benz Museum. The 220 SE was superseded in the early autumn of 1965 by the 250 SE, which featured the new M129 engine. Producing 150 horsepower at 5500 rpm, it gave the vehicle a significant improvement in top speed, 120 mph, and 0-60 acceleration time of 12 seconds. Visibly the only changes affected the new 14 rims, which came with new hub cabs and beauty rings accommodating the larger disc brakes and new rear axle from the W108 family.
This beautifully presented example was imported to the UK from the dry Californian climate in 2017 where an almost immediate restoration began. The restoration included a full repaint in white with a pearlescent fleck, a full retrim with new woodwork, new carpets and biscuit leather hide. We are informed that since 2017 the mechanical works on the car include the injectors being rebuilt, a gearbox service and new tyres. Offered with a current MoT test certificate valid until September 2019, this elegant and timeless pillarless coup , carrying one of the most elegant profiles of all post-war Mercedes-Benz and having been recently restored welcomes any inspection.
